I had my dress preserved by Caring Cleaners about six months after the wedding. I actually drove from Jacksonville to Daytona since they are the closest AWGS gown preservationists, and they were accommodating to my long-distance issue. Once they called to have me come in to check the dress (you do a white-glove inspection of the dress before they box it up) they didn't expect me to be able to come in right away, just the next opportunity I had to make the drive which turned out to be a couple of weeks later. Also, they were okay with us giving an approximate time for our appointments, since we were coming from so far away. They presented me with a nicely-displayed boxed gown (with a plastic cover so you can see the displayed gown without opening the box) as well as a garment analysis document which lists the value of the gown for insurance purposes. It was obvious that they were taking pains to keep and preserve my gown as well as possible.
